CAPT Duane ‘Mike’ Smith is a graduate of the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY. After graduation, he sailed in various licensed capacities as well as working in the offshore oil industry and served in the U. S Navy Reserves. After sailing for a number of years, he transitioned from the U. S. Navy Reserves to the U. S. Coast Guard where he spent over 25 years on Active Duty helping ensure the safety and security of America’s maritime domain.
Each of the positions CAPT Smith held in the U. S. Coast Guard required him to work closely with local, state and federal agencies. Working in a collaborative manner allowed him and the U. S. Coast Guard to develop programs and policies that took into account the varied interests of each of the participants. Included within these efforts was his close work with local, state and federal agencies in creation of multi-agency partnerships and operational plans for responding to disasters and ensuring the safety of the community.
For his efforts in the U. S. Coast Guard, Mike received numerous awards, including three Meritorious Service Medals, two Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the Department of Transportation Superior Achievement Medal, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal, and the Commandant's Letter of Commendation.
CAPT Smith holds the degree of Doctor of Management in Organizational Leadership from the University of Phoenix; a Masters of Administrative Science from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; a Masters of National Security Strategy from the National War College in Washington, D.C.; and a Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation from the U.
